Preliminary Bird Survey

Invasive plant species pose significant threats to ecosystem health and biodiversity worldwide. The removal of these exotic species is a common practice in ecological restoration efforts aimed at restoring native habitats. However, the effectiveness of invasive plant removal in promoting biodiversity, particularly in terms of avian and butterfly communities, remains a subject of investigation. This study aims to evaluate the impact of invasive plant removal on bird and butterfly diversity within ecological plots, comparing areas with invasive species to those where they have been successfully removed.

  • Site Selection: Ecological plots with and without Senna spectabilis within the larger forest land restoration site at the Tholpetty range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Baseline Survey: Conduct initial bird and butterfly surveys in both types of plots to establish baseline diversity and abundance around forestland restoration work being carried out at the above mentioned site.

Expected Output: The Baseline Survey will set the parameters for a long term field research which will culminate in an end line survey and reporting of the findings. This study contributes to our understanding of the effectiveness of invasive plant removal as a tool for ecological restoration, wherein the avian and butterfly species are being used as ecological indicators.

Survey Duration: April 2nd week to May 1st week 2024 (This time period is chosen inline with the nesting period of the bird species in the Western Ghats)

Team: The fund will logistically support a surveyor and a field assistant.
